Suica New Character Vote Closes 23 September: Three Designs Are in the Running

JR East is letting the public choose Suica's next image character from three finalists. The online vote is open now and closes at 23:59 JST on Wednesday 23 September 2026, ahead of the long-running Suica Penguin's planned handover in 2027.

The short version: voting runs from 8–23 September 2026, with the form closing at 23:59 JST on the final day. It is one vote per person. JR East says anyone can take part regardless of age, gender, occupation or nationality, provided they accept the rules and complete the required form fields. The candidate with the highest valid vote total after checking and aggregation becomes the new Suica character.

1. The vote closes on 23 September — and it is open broadly

JR East opened the Suica New Character Design Vote on 8 September. The official rules set the deadline at Wednesday 23 September 2026 at 23:59 Japan Standard Time.

The eligibility is unusually broad for a Japanese brand vote. JR East says anyone can vote, with no restriction based on age, gender, occupation or nationality. Voters do need to agree to the voting rules and answer the required fields in the form, including attribute and questionnaire items.

There is a strict one-vote-per-person rule. JR East says duplicate voting, automated voting or other conduct that interferes with a fair count can be invalidated. If the form is temporarily hard to reach because of heavy traffic, the official page advises trying again later.

2. The three finalists take very different approaches

The final three were created by young creators appointed by the selection committee after JR East first gathered ideas and expectations from group employees. The committee then narrowed the field to three designs for the public vote.

Candidate A is a squirrel whose body pattern forms one continuous railway-like line from head to tail. Its creator says the idea came from JR East connecting Japan and people's lives.

Candidate B is a rabbit, designed around the idea of listening to people and leaping towards the future. Its purple colour mixes blue, representing reassurance, with red, representing excitement.

Candidate C pairs an orange, deliberately hard-to-identify creature with a small mole carried in a pouch, built around the idea of showing the mole places it has never seen and expressing the excitement of going out.

JR East publishes the designers' intent and selection-committee comments for each option on the official vote page, so there is more to compare than a thumbnail before choosing.

3. The public vote really does decide the new character

Under JR East's published rules, the committee will aggregate the results after checking for fraudulent or duplicate voting. The finalist with the highest number of valid votes becomes the new Suica character.

That makes this more consequential than a popularity poll used only for feedback. The winning design is intended to become the next public face of Suica as JR East develops what it calls Suica Renaissance.

The official vote page also says cookie information is used to help prevent fraudulent and duplicate voting, while questionnaire information may be analysed in non-personally identifying form for the project and future service or promotional planning.

4. The familiar Suica Penguin is due to graduate at the end of FY2026

JR East announced in February that the current Suica Penguin will “graduate” at the end of the 2026 financial year and hand over to the new character. A formal baton-touch event is planned for the end of March 2027.

The company is not treating that as a quiet disappearance. Its Penguin Years campaign is running through 2026 with anniversary content, merchandise and events celebrating the existing character's long association with Suica.

For many Tokyo residents, the penguin has been part of the everyday visual language of stations, cards, advertising and merchandise for years. That is why a mascot election can feel surprisingly local even though Suica is used far beyond central Tokyo.

5. The design is only the first decision

JR East's current project timeline says the winning character will be decided in November 2026. The voting rules give a specific announcement date: 18 November, at a character unveiling event. That date is also Suica's 25th anniversary.

After the character is revealed, JR East plans a broad public call for a nickname. The committee is scheduled to review name submissions in January 2027, with the nickname announcement and baton-touch ceremony planned for March.

In other words, the September vote chooses the design, not the final name. The public will get another chance to shape the identity later.

6. This is a character change, not a new fare or card rule

The current announcement is about Suica's image character. JR East has not presented this vote as a change to how travellers tap through gates, how stored value works, or whether existing Suica cards remain usable.

That distinction matters because Suica has several wider development projects under the “Suica Renaissance” banner. The company says it wants Suica to evolve from a device centred on transport and small payments towards a broader “lifestyle device”. The new character is being positioned as a symbol of that longer-term direction.

So if you are visiting Tokyo this week, there is no new ticketing procedure to learn because of the mascot vote. The practical action is simply to vote before the deadline if you want a say.

7. Why this is a small but very Tokyo kind of story

Tokyo's transport systems are not just infrastructure; their station signs, sounds, cards, shops and mascots are part of the city's everyday culture. Suica sits right in the middle of that overlap between practical travel and local identity.

Residents and commuters may care because the winning character will become a familiar part of the JR East environment after the penguin era. Travellers can take part too, and the official rules do not exclude voters by nationality.

If you want to have a say, compare all three designs and their background notes on JR East's official vote page, then submit one vote before 23:59 JST on 23 September. The winner itself will not be announced until November.
